RELEASES ~ FLORIS BATES - NASTY LOVE
Nasty Love captures the adolescent spirit in the millennial years, seen through the unique artistic perspective of the Floris Bates persona. Floris Bates documents the tween years, when almost
every kid was walking around medicated and high on kid-pep.
As a youngster he was navigating that world with ease, partying with socially accepted ‘drugs’ at the local youth club with all the
other privileged kids from his home town Haarlem (the Netherlands). Bound to have an effect on him he wrote the album ‘Nasty Love’ in 2013. At the time he was influenced by Sonic
Youth/Ariel Pink/the Smiths and various pop musicians.
Overall themes Floris Bates deals with are: celebrity culture, internet, anxiety, addiction, adolescency, boredom, fun, art and love.
Since Bates was a classically trained musician, composing mostly classical pieces on his piano, he took an a-typical turn towards pop-rock himself. Finally, after a few years, we are releasing
this great album on Geertruida in October 2019. The album touched us right away because we could hear the message loud and clear; not only could we hear that inner teenage struggle that we
have already become familiar with through other artists we liked in the past, but also the social criticism that lies beneath the obvious horsing around and the seemingly bullshit lyrics.
